what to put in a carry on bag

After my recent airport fiasco I realized just how important carry on bags are when you are traveling, especially the second day when we couldn't get our luggage back and it got sent on the 2:00 am flight to Florida. Whenever I go on a plane I try and fit as much as I can in my carry on in case my luggage ever got lost. This hasn't happened to be yet, so hopefully I'm not jinxing myself by writing this.

It is important that the bad you choose zips or closes in some way because I was on a plane once where a woman tripped and when she fell into me all her stuff flew out of her bag and into the aisle, so you don't want to risk losing anything. Anyway, here is what I always put in a carry on bag:

1. phone + charger

Even though this goes without saying, this is an absolute must have!! You never want to end up having to dig through you bag at the airport terminal to find your phone or if your flight is delayed you don't want to be stuck without a charger.

2. laptop

I always put my laptop in my carry on. I'm afraid that it would get broken or cracked if I put it in my suitcase and I feel better knowing where it is. Its also good for watching Netflix shows I downloaded or doing work on the plane.

3. headphones

I bring headphones every time I go on a plane, especially if it is going to be a long flight. I usually try to sleep a little on the plane but I sometimes it is so loud, so headphones make it much easier.

4. sweatshirt or sweater

Bringing a sweatshirt or sweater is always a good idea. I'm always cold so I'm never comfortable on a plane without one and you could also use it as a pillow or blanket.

5. extra clothes

My luggage has never been lost before but just in case I always put an extra shirt, pair of leggings or shorts, etc. in my bag.

7. sunglasses

For me sunglasses are something you always should have around (especially for driving, I learned that one the hard way) and if you don't have them you end up wishing that you did.

Depending on where you are going you might want some other things in your carry on such as gloves or scarf if you are traveling somewhere cold.
